Sumida Ward’s Saiikukai Hospital: Introducing the Groundbreaking ‘Baby Post’ Initiative for Mothers in Need

The social welfare corporation “Saiikukai” in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, has announced a policy to set up a so-called “baby post” at the ward’s “Saiikukai Hospital,” which has an obstetric department.

The company aims to begin operation sometime next year, and is also hoping to implement projects such as “secret childbirth,” in which pregnant women give birth by revealing their name and contact information only to medical institutions.

The number of women suffering from unexpected pregnancies and orphan childbirth due to poverty and abuse is increasing, and cases of abandonment of babies are occurring one after another. We plan to proceed with specific discussions with Sumida Ward.

According to the association, if the facility is established, it will be the second medical institution in the country, following Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto City.

The support association said, “We have seen a series of tragic incidents happening all over the country, and we have decided that we must act as a safety net to protect mothers and babies. This project cannot be done without support from the government. We aim to start this project within the next fiscal year. We will continue to diligently prepare for the future.”
