Šumava and Sněžka report the first snow. “It will happen again,” says the meteorologist

The first snow of this season fell on some peaks of Šumava on Thursday. It was about a centimeter of dust, which melted after a while, said Eva Houbová from the České Budějovice branch of the Hydrometeorological Institute. Snow fell, for example, on Blatenské vrch, Plechý or Boubín.

“It was really just a dust storm that lasted for about an hour. A similar situation will be repeated in the following days,” said Houbová.

THREAT OF FLOODING

In the south of Bohemia, it rains from the morning until most of the day. However, precipitation can turn to snow at higher elevations. These are altitudes in the area above 1300 and somewhere up to 1400 meters above sea level. In the morning, it also snowed lightly on the German peaks of Šumava, namely Velké Javor and Luzné. With a height of 1456 meters above sea level, Velký Javor is the highest mountain in Šumava. Snow also fell today on the highest Czech mountain Sněžce in the Giant Mountains.

Lying September snow is observed on the mountains in the Czech Republic approximately once every three years. The last time it happened was in September 2022, meteorologists said on Facebook.
