Almost every character in the series had a talking name

The historical saga of the reign of Sultan Suleiman and his relatives was published in Turkey in 2011. At first, no one could have thought that the series would be popular. However, even before the end of the first season, the project was talked about all over the world. History was especially loved in Russia.

Many viewers could not tear themselves away from the screen, not only because of the famously twisted plot, but also out of curiosity. Indeed, in the series, the creators often tried to recreate the surroundings and historical realities of the 16th century. Of course, they did not always succeed in this, sometimes they had to go against reality for the sake of a beautiful picture. However, the writers tried to keep many key points. For example, they did not change the names of their key characters.

Earlier, Express Gazeta wrote that almost all female heroines’ names were translated quite unusually. So, the most beloved sister of Sultan Suleiman was Hatice, which meant “premature” – but not in the usual sense for us. Male heroes were also named so that in the future they would grow up worthy people.

Ironically, Sultan Suleiman, who spent most of his life on campaigns of conquest and even died in war, was called “peaceful.” However, if we compare this padishah with at least his father, Sultan Selim Khan, who received the nickname Terrible, or with his descendant Murad the Bloody, then Suleiman can really be considered a peaceful ruler.

Ibrahim – this name is translated as “father of peoples” or “prophet.” If you remember what a sense of self-worth the named brother of Sultan Suleiman had, then everything converges here. The same can be said about shehzade Mustafa, the firstborn of the ruler from the “Magnificent Age”. His name means “chosen one”, and this is how most of the heroes treated the heir of Suleiman and Mahidevran.

However, the sons of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska were also named beautifully. Mehmed is “worthy of praise”, Selim is “intact”, Bayezid is “superior”, and Cihangir is “the conqueror of the world”. And even minor characters had telling names.

So, a vivid example is the son-in-law of the dynasty, Rustem Pasha – he was called the “hero” at birth. Another hero of Matrakchi, Nasuh-effendi, important for the plot, responded both to his own name and to his nickname. Matrakchi in translation into Russian means “stick”. And as fans of the “Magnificent Century” know, this man was a great fighter who could shame the padishah himself. And Nasuh is translated as “advising” and “calling for good.”
