Suharto will be sad to see the nation’s debt of thousands of trillions

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The daughter of the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia Suharto, Siti Hediati Hariyadi or Titiek Soeharto judged that if he was still alive, his father would be sad when he saw the state of the Indonesian nation, which he said was experiencing a slight decline at this time.

This he conveyed after the commemoration of Suharto’s 100th Birthday which was held at the At-Tin Mosque, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday (8/6).

“I think you’re sad when you see our current situation. So what he built doesn’t seem to be advancing, it’s a little backwards,” said Titiek.

Titiek assessed that the apprehensive condition can be seen from the country’s debt which has been piling up from year to year. In fact, he said, Indonesia’s foreign debt is now far higher than during the New Order era when Suharto was in power.

“What was the initial debt, now it’s thousands of trillions [rupiah],” added Titiek.

Apart from that, the Berkarya Party politician hopes that the public can emulate the various achievements and contributions that Suharto and his wife, the late Tien Suharto, have made for Indonesia.

According to him, throughout his life Suharto has always fought for the Indonesian people from the trap of poverty. He also asked the public to always pray for the late Suharto and Tien Suharto.

“As far as I know, Pak Harto has fought for this nation all his life. In order to escape from poverty and ignorance,” he said.

For the record, at the end of his reign in 1998, Indonesia’s foreign debt was IDR 551.4 trillion. Meanwhile, the GDP at that time was in the range of Rp. 955.6 trillion.

Meanwhile, as of May 21, 2021, during the administration of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Bank Indonesia (BI) recorded that Indonesia’s foreign debt reached US$415.6 billion at the end of the first quarter of 2021 or around Rp5,972.58 trillion (exchange rate of Rp14. .371 per US dollar).

That position fell 0.4 percent compared to the position of the fourth quarter of 2020, US $ 417.5 billion. At that time, the Head of the BI Communications Department Erwin Haryono in an official statement ensured that Indonesia’s debt structure was healthy as reflected in the debt-to-GDP ratio which was maintained at around 39.1 percent, down from the fourth quarter of 2020 at around 39.4 percent.
