Sufjan Stevens suffers from Guillain-Barré syndrome. The 48-year-old singer was admitted to hospital a few weeks ago with paralysis symptoms. He is recovering and has to learn to walk again.

The American singer, known for his contributions to the soundtrack of Call Me by Your Name, woke up one morning last month and couldn’t walk. “My hands, arms and legs were numb and tingling and I had no strength, no sensation, no mobility,” he wrote. Instagram.

Stevens was taken to hospital, where the muscle disease was diagnosed after many tests and examinations. “I spent about two weeks in an operating room, confined to a bed, while my doctors did everything they could to keep me alive and stabilize my condition. I owe them my life.”

The artist is now recovering. “It’s a slow process, but they say I will recover. It just takes a lot of time, patience and it’s hard work. Most people who have this syndrome learn to walk on their own within a year, so I’m hopeful. I’m only in my second week of rehabilitation, but I’m doing very well and I’m working very hard to be able to walk again.”

Stevens will release his new album on October 6 Javelin out. All the singles from the album were released Will Anybody Ever Love Me? in So You Are Tired.
