County representatives offered an appearance this Sunday and noted the humanitarian crisis is getting out of control “due to the complete incompetence of the Joe Biden administration and the Kathy Hochul administration”.
They also raised possible legal actions to prevent New York from transporting any migrant to the county. However, Eric Adams has not announced a plan involving Long Island.
“It’s not an anti-immigration stance,” Suffolk officials clarified.
Kevin McCaffrey, Suffolk County President, reiterated at a press conference: “County residents should not have to shoulder the burden of the failed policies of the Biden and Hochul administrations”.
He also clarified that the decision “It is not an anti-immigration position” and that so far they have not had contact with anyone from the administration of Mayor Eric Adams.
Mayor Eric Adams said New York City has received more than 70,000 asylum seekers, and at least 42,000 are already housed. He also asks for money and support from President Joe Biden.
“The numbers are really alarming when you look at them. They have blocked true comprehensive immigration reform. This is not sustainable. This needs to be addressed.”he expressed.
Like Suffolk County, Orange and Rockland opposed any plan involving the arrival of immigrants to these towns. In fact, the latter two declared an emergency to block any reception of asylum seekers.
