Suffering from Persistent Fatigue, Long-Term Effects of Covid-19 Page all

KOMPAS.com – According to a new study, more than half of patients and health staff with Covid-19 who is being monitored by Irish hospitals, is suffering fatigue who have continuously recovered from Covid-19.

The new study highlights the “significant burden” of symptoms that persist after being declared cured of Covid-19.

It comes as patient groups and doctors are calling for more research into the medium and long-term effects of the coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, which has sickened more than 30 million people worldwide and killed at least 943,000.

The study, which tracked 128 participants at St James’s Hospital, found that 52 percent of them reported persistent fatigue when their condition was monitored about 10 weeks after clinical recovery from Covid-19 infection, regardless of how serious their initial infection was.

“While the emerging features of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been well characterized, the mid-term and long-term consequences of the infection appear to have yet to be explored,” said Liam Townsend, of St James’s Hospital and Trinity Translational Medicine Institute at Trinity College. Dublin.

Meanwhile, from preliminary studies that have not done peer review , involving 71 people who were hospitalized and 57 hospital employees with mild symptoms. The median age was 50 years and all participants tested positive for Covid-19.

Reported by sciencealert, Friday (18/09/2020), the researchers looked at a variety of potential factors, including the severity of the initial disease and pre-existing conditions, including depression.

They found that it made no difference whether the patient was hospitalized or not.

In addition, they also found that women, although only more than half of the participants (54 percent), accounted for two-thirds of those who experience constant fatigue (67 percent).

Those with a previous history of anxiety or depression were also found to be more likely to experience persistent fatigue.

The authors said the findings suggest that more work is needed to assess the long-term impact of Covid-19 on patients.

“Our findings suggest that there is a significant burden of post-coronavirus fatigue in individuals following the acute phase of Covid-19 disease.”

Long-term Covid-19 Effects

Research, presented at European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Conference on Coronavirus Disease (ECCVID) later this month, suggesting those affected deserve early intervention.

As the pandemic has spread across the globe, most attention has focused on its immediate impact, measured by hospital admissions and deaths.

Yet it is becoming increasingly clear that the corona virus can leave an effect for a long time after the patient recovers.

Online support groups around the world have attracted thousands of members seeking help and advice about ongoing illnesses.

Another study in July, also found that 87 percent of hospital patients who recovered in Italy, still suffer from at least one symptom, 60 days after being infected with the coronavirus. Fatigue and difficulty breathing are the two most common symptoms.

Researcher from King’s College London, who is behind a large-scale symptom tracking project, estimates that one in 10 people using the app still experience symptoms after 30 days and some people still feel unwell for months.

“We are increasingly seeing evidence of the long-term effects of Covid-19, and fatigue is one of the most commonly reported side effects,” said Michael Head, of the University of Southampton.

“This study highlights that fatigue is experienced both in patients who are hospitalized and in those with mild initial symptoms,” he said of the study.

Head emphasized that the prolonged increase in Covid-19 is the reason it is important to reduce community transmission, even among younger groups of people who are not immediately seriously ill.
