22-year-old Nawäl Aloird is counting on you. This young woman from Hoeneim, near Strasbourg, suffers from rare acute leukemia. Cancer of the blood that affects its production of white and red blood cells. She is therefore appealing for donations on social networks to have a bone marrow transplant.
To keep hope
While waiting for this precious donor, Nawäl will start chemotherapy again this Wednesday at Strasbourg University Hospital. A heavy and tiring treatment, which does not guarantee a complete cure. “There is a lot of risk that I will be in remission for a short time and that I will relapse, and therefore cancer again“, breathes the young woman.
Not finding a donor would be fatal for her: “If I can’t find a donor, I might die.“His body cannot accept all transplants. The donor has to be compatible.”It’s quite complicated to find a suitable person. Even nine out of ten is risky in terms of infections“, adds Nawäl. A medical complication which would then oblige him to remain in a sterile room.
Rare compatibilities
For the time being doctors are looking for the first compatibilities, before being able to open additional examinations to ensure the transplant. Between a brother and his sister, the chances of success are 25%. On the other hand, between two individuals taken at random, it climbs to one chance in a million. The operation is performed in 48 hours in the operating room and with general anesthesia.
