Suffering from hay fever? This is why you should avoid alcohol

The hay fever season has started again, because for many people it is certainly no fun. Every year there are various solutions proposed against hay fever. Everything to ensure that you no longer suffer from all that sniffling and sneezing. One solution that many people do not know about is to stop drinking alcohol. This is why it can have a lot of influence on (the disappearance of) your hay fever complaints.

Get the sunglasses

Among other things, we often hear that we need a lot of nuts and spicy herbs to eat to combat hay fever complaints. According to Peter Hellings (doctor at the UZ in Leuven) there is no scientific basis for this. What does he think works? “Firstly, avoid exposure to the allergens as much as possible. Secondly, rinse the nose with a saline solution and thirdly, avoid factors that irritate the airways,” he tells Het Laatste Nieuws. If you do not want to suffer from hay fever, it is therefore wise to wear sunglasses often and leave the forest for what it is. But what does alcohol have to do with it?

The link between alcohol and hay fever

In addition to these tips, there is another solution, which is scientifically substantiated: no more drinking alcohol. “About half of patients with respiratory allergies have an increase in symptoms when they drink alcohol,” says Hellings. “That is independent of the allergic inflammatory reaction, but is a consequence of the hypersensitivity of the airways. Alcohol binds to substances in the airways and that is how the complaints arise.”

The combination of alcohol and hypersensitive airways is therefore certainly not a good one and only aggravates the complaints. We know that too!
