Suez plans to build a food waste pre-treatment unit in Fameck, near Thionville, by 2024. Elected officials from Sydeme are worried about this “competition”. “The desire to cooperate existed among us,” laments Roland Roth, president.
Jonathan Breuer – Today at 5:33 p.m.
Near Thionville, in Fameck, Suez is planning the construction of a food waste processing unit, with a capacity of 30,000 tonnes of waste per year, by the third quarter of 2024. It will be a bridge between the deposit of food waste and the 119 methanizers located in Lorraine. Concretely ? The material (food products, unsold items from the food industry, etc.) will pass through a biodeconditioner, separating the packaging from the biowaste which will be crushed.
“Why two units in Moselle? »
In Moselle-Est, elected officials are worried about this “competition”. “Why are there two units in the same department,” asks Roselyne Da Soller, deputy of Hargarten-aux-Mines, representative of Pays Boulageois. Commissioned in 2011, the Méthavalor methanization unit, installed in Morsbach, can ingest 46,000 tonnes of green waste and meal leftovers to transform them into biogas, which powers a 1700 kW electrical plant and is injected into the network city gas.
” The bottom of the problem “
“The desire to cooperate nevertheless existed among us, it existed elsewhere, it does not exist everywhere,” laments Roland Roth, president of Sydeme, the waste union of Moselle-Est. But these are choices that elected politicians make. The root of the problem is there. » “The Suez project is not a methanization unit but a collection center for leftover meals, the Sydeme and Moselle-Est may be a little far away,” tempers Philippe Schutz, mayor of Boulay.
“We could have collaborated”
But Roland Roth doesn’t really understand this decision. “We have an innovative methanization unit which produces gas and electricity, all of which is perfectly virtuous. We could collaborate more effectively at the departmental level. There would be savings to be made. » Especially since, like Méthavalor, it is not running at full capacity solely with the bio-waste of the inhabitants of Moselle-Est. It is also supplied with German green waste.
