An official statement issued by the Suez Canal announced today, Saturday, that the locomotive Al-Buhaira Fahd, which belongs to the authority, sank after it collided with a liquefied gas tanker that was accompanying it in the Al-Balah region.

Lieutenant General Osama Rabie explained that the collision occurred during the crossing of the “CHINAGAS LEGEND” tanker within the convoy of the south on its journey coming from Singapore and heading to the United States of America, with the locomotive, which led to the occurrence of holes in the hull of the locomotive and the entry of water and its sinking.

The head of the authority stated that the length of the tanker is 230 meters, its width is 36 meters, with a draft of 27 feet, and a total load of 52 thousand tons, pointing out that the tanker is currently waiting in Port Said until the completion of the procedures related to the incident.

Navigational sources said that the tug Fahd was accompanying the gas tanker, and while the liquefied gas ship was turning to enter the Al-Balah branch, it collided with the marine tug, and the collision caused holes in the hull of the tug and water entered the machinery room and the locomotive sank.

Lieutenant-General Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority, announced today, Saturday, the success of the maritime rescue team in locating the sunken locomotive at kilometer 51.300, numbering the canal, so that the work of extracting it and evacuating the navigational channel begins during the coming hours, explaining that an immediate start is scheduled to facilitate the movement of navigation in the canal from The convoy south from the ramification of km 61 numbering the canal, provided that the passage of ships is secured with the help of warning buoys that surround the site of the sunken locomotive until it is recovered, while navigation from the north direction did not stop and all the ships of the convoy crossed and were not affected by the accident.
