Suez Canal authorities saw no fault in the Ever Given incident – 2024-04-28 05:57:23

/ world today news/ The Suez Canal is not to blame for the accident with the stranded container ship Ever Given, said the head of the canal’s administration, Osama Rabia.

“We are the injured party,” he said, adding that “an investigation into the incident will determine who should pay compensation.” According to him, the channel was losing up to $15 million a day due to the incident. Rabia emphasized that “such a complex incident can occur due to several reasons, both technical reasons and human error.” He pointed out that “thousands of ships pass through the canal regularly and such incidents have not happened” – “the current incident is an accident”.

Rabia said the “congestion” from ships is expected to be cleared in three and a half days, the canal will operate around the clock. At the same time, no ban on the passage of container ships of the size of Ever Given is foreseen. As noted by Rabia, even before the incident, a much larger ship passed through the channel, but no problems arose, reports RIA Novosti.

422 ships were stranded in the Suez Canal due to the incident. Rabia said that everyone is confident in the authorities’ ability to overcome the crisis, so none of the stranded ships received a request to change course, reports TASS.

We recall that the Suez Canal was blocked by a container ship heading from China to the Netherlands and stuck at the 151st kilometer of the canal. On Monday, navigation was resumed, with the first ships beginning to pass through the Suez Canal.
