While the movie Kathal was getting great audience and critical acclaim, Sudhi Kozhikode’s role of Thangan was a popular character along with Mathew Devasi played by Mammootty in the film.
Sudhi portrayed the character on screen without much dialogue or anything else. Sudhi, who was active in small roles and theater stages in the early days, became active in the mainstream cinema with the Mammootty film ‘Palerimanikyam Oru Pathira Kurdiyam Katha’ directed by Ranjith.
It was her acquaintance with Jio Baby that later gave Sudhi great roles. Sudhi played notable roles in Jio Baby’s films like ‘Great Indian Kitchen’, ‘Freedom Fight’ and ‘Sridhanya Catering’.
Kathal, which has just released, is considered by the critics to be the best performance of Sudhi’s career. Sudhi says that she did not know that she would be given such a big role when she called Kathal.
“For the film, Jio Tanna is reading the book ‘When Two Men Kiss’ by Kishore Kumar. That is how I fully understand my character. There is a bigger change for me than for the core audience. Until I came to act in this film, I also lived with the common perception that homosexuality was a disease.
But it was only when I read and understood more about this film that I realized that this is a very natural thing, never a medical condition, and many of us, especially in the gay community, live with shame because of society.
Many people from the community talked to me after watching the movie. Not the me before, but the me after doing this film. I can now understand the community, especially the gay community. I was not worried about playing a gay character. Because I am an actor. Acting is my passion.” In an interview with The Fourth, Sudhi opened up about her role and how it changed her life.
