Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) on Tuesday (26/10/2021) issued a statement of position to Israel. Uncle Sam is critical of the Jewish settlement plans in the West Bank, Palestine.
The Israeli ‘friend’ said he strongly opposed Tel Aviv’s decision. This is the strongest criticism of President Joe Biden’s government, having previously always received the blessing of his predecessor, Donald Trump.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said the US was deeply concerned. This is believed to increase tensions between the two sides that have been going on for a long time.
“We strongly oppose the expansion of settlements, which is in no way consistent with efforts to de-escalate tensions and to ensure calm, and it undermines the prospects for a two-state solution,” he was quoted as saying. AFP, Wednesday (27/10/2021).
“We also view plans for the retroactive legalization of illegal posts as unacceptable.”
Price said the decision would jeopardize relations with Israel. But he argued that the US had raised the issue with its close allies.
Earlier, the housing and construction ministry under the far-right Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, on Sunday announced a tender for 1,355 houses in the West Bank. The territory itself came under Israeli control after the 1967 six-day war.
This policy was strongly opposed by the Palestinians. Prime Minister (PM) Mohammed Shtayyeh also urged Washington to be willing to help Palestine in this so-called “colonialization” issue.
