Matthias Theodor Kloft was born on September 5, 1959 in Bonn. Bishop Dr. Franz Kamphaus ordained him a priest on December 8, 1984. Kloft then worked as a chaplain. In 1988 he began doctoral studies and received his doctorate on December 8, 1994 from the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster.
Kloft then worked for several years as pastor of the Herz Jesu parish in Frankfurt. He researched in the field of church history and was considered a proven expert on the history of the Catholic Church in the diocese of Limburg and the city of Frankfurt. On June 1, 2010, he was appointed deputy director of the Diocesan Museum in Limburg and the Cathedral Museum in Frankfurt. At the same time he taught church history at the Goethe University in Frankfurt and at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.
