Beijing –
Thousands of people were evacuated from several multi-storey apartment buildings in the city of Tianjin, China up north, in the last few days. A mass evacuation had to be carried out after a sudden land subsidence incident occurred which triggered it large cracks in the streets around the apartments.
As reported ReutersFriday (9/6/2023), government report Tianjin said a large fissure appeared in a road section near a residential complex in Jinan district, Tianjin, with geologists suggesting the situation was most likely caused by an underground cavity that exists at a depth of 1,300 meters.
It was noted that as of June 3 local time, according to state media report Global Times citing the local district administration, a total of 3,899 residents from at least three multi-storey buildings as high as 25 floors had been evacuated to nearby hotels.
The Tianjin government called the incident a “sudden geological disaster” following preliminary information from geologists and local government departments after they carried out surveys, mapping and monitoring of the site.
“The situation is very rare,” said one expert who was questioned about the incident.
The Tianjin government further stated that it cannot be ruled out that the drilling of geothermal wells has resulted in loss of land and land subsidence in the area.
Experts say multi-storey buildings facing cracked streets have been affected to varying degrees.
