Sudbury acquires 55 new affordable housing for seniors

At a press conference Tuesday morning, Marc Serré, MP for Nickel Belt, announced that a low-interest loan of $ 18 million will be used for the construction of this five-story multi-residential building, which will be located at 11 Elm Street.

The 55 units of the building are already full, even if they have not yet been built, and the waiting list counts about ten people.

The demand for affordable housing is particularly pronounced among seniors.

The latter are especially affected by the situation in the real estate market, where the price of houses often exceeds their true value.

The project is funded by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s construction finance provision.

The architect in charge of the project, Sheena Sharp, hopes to build a zero emission residence.

According to her, this model should significantly reduce the operating costs of the residence in the long term.

Thanks to the efforts of the community

It took 8 years of steps and negotiations to obtain the more than 17 million dollars needed for the construction.

According to the president of Coniston’s non-profit seniors’ housing association, Les Lisk, the project would not have progressed without community participation.

The citizens of Coniston believed in this project from the start, almost nine years ago. They showed patience and determination, and provided incredible support.

The vision at the heart of the project is to allow seniors to age in the communities from which they come.

A crying need

Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger recognizes that more housing is needed to meet demand in Greater Sudbury.

We need a hundred projects like this, admet M. Bigger.

But what happens in Coniston inspires us to move forward, he adds.
