“Sudanese Army and RSF Agree to 72-Hour Nationwide Ceasefire, US Pushes for Permanent Cessation of Hostilities”

“After intense negotiations over the past 48 hours, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed to implement a nationwide ceasefire effective midnight April 24 (Monday 10 p.m. GMT), which should last 72 hours,” Antony Blinken said in a statement.

“During this period, the United States expects the army and the RSF to fully and immediately respect this ceasefire,” he added.

A first step towards the cessation of fighting?

The American Secretary of State further indicates that the United States is working with its allies and partners with a view to setting up a “commission” which would be responsible for negotiating a permanent cessation of hostilities in Sudan.

Antony Blinken had spoken earlier on Monday with his Kenyan counterpart about the conflict in Sudan and has recently increased exchanges with rival generals, as well as with countries in the region and the African Union.

Many countries are carrying out repatriation operations for their nationals or their diplomatic personnel from Sudan, where the war between the army and the paramilitaries has been raging since April 15.
