Sudan War Sparks World’s Worst Famine Crisis: UN Agency Sounds Alarm

The war in Sudan risks creating the world’s worst famine crisis.

This is the warning reiterated by the World Food Program (WFP/Pam) almost 11 months after the outbreak of hostilities between Khartoum’s army and paramilitary groups. Now “millions of lives and the peace and stability of an entire region are at stake,” said Cindy McCain, executive director of the World Food Program WFP/PAM.

Twenty years ago, Darfur was the site of the largest global famine crisis. The whole world sent help there. Then Cindy McCain mentioned the conflict in Sudan’s vast western region in the early 2000s that killed 300,000 people. But today the people of Sudan are not remembered. The United Nations agency says it is currently unable to reach 90 percent of people who face an “emergency of hunger” because of the war that broke out on April 15, 2023. Only five percent of the Sudanese population, estimated at 45 million before the conflict, “could afford one decent meal a day.”

600,000 displaced Sudanese are in overcrowded transit camps in South Sudan. Families go hungry and face more hunger. Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council may discuss a draft British resolution calling for an immediate end to hostilities in Sudan ahead of the start of the upcoming Ramadan, as early as tomorrow, the Associated Press reported. The news agency reported that the resolution expressed serious concern about the escalating violence and the catastrophic deterioration of the humanitarian situation, including food insecurity, particularly in Darfur.
