Sudan: US calls on Israel to pressure General Burhan to end coup

General maintains good relations with Israeli security apparatus

The United States has called on Israel to take advantage of its good relations with the leader of the coup in Sudan, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to pressure the country’s military to restore civilian control, Axios news site reported on Wednesday.

Citing US and Israeli officials, the site states that A. al-Burhan has good relations with the Mossad and other high-level security bodies in Israel, stressing that he was notably a central figure in the process of standardization between the two countries.

According to Axos, the Biden administration has let Jerusalem know that normalization between the two countries cannot continue until Sudan is stabilized.

The country, stuck in political and economic slump for decades, is now at a standstill between intransigent military and anti-coup demonstrators in “civil disobedience” since General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane’s coup on October 25 which dissolved all the institutions.
