A week-long ceasefire between the army and paramilitaries, the two warring sides in Sudan for control of power, officially came into effect today, after more than five weeks of war, a thousand dead and more than a million displaced and refugees.
It is currently unclear whether this truce, which is intended to allow the passage of civilians and humanitarian aid, has actually been implemented on the ground, as fighting, mainly in Khartoum and Ntarfur (west) usually subsides at night. During the day, the UN spoke of “fighting and troop movements”.
Residents of Khartoum’s northeastern suburbs reported fighting this evening after an agreed ceasefire between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s troops and General Hamdan Daglo’s Rapid Support Force paramilitaries took effect.
