Today, Friday, the Sudanese army announced that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, had received phone calls from the tripartite mechanism consisting of the United Nations, the African Union and the IGAD Organization, which touched on standing by Sudan and emphasizing the need for the situation to return to normal.
Al-Burhan also received a call from the Quartet mechanism, which includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, where all confirmed their support for Sudan in resolving its issues and returning the situation to normal.
Yesterday, the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Muhammad Hamdan Daglo, announced their agreement to extend the armistice for an additional 72 hours, with American and Saudi efforts.
While the authorities and foreign countries seeking to end the fighting welcomed the extension of the ceasefire agreement, and called for its full implementation. In a joint statement, members of the tripartite mechanism (the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the United Nations) and the quadruple (Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Britain and the United States) welcomed the readiness of the parties to the conflict “to engage in dialogue in order to reach a permanent cessation of hostilities, and to ensure unhindered humanitarian access.”
It is noteworthy that since the outbreak of fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, several truces have been reached, but all of them failed to hold, and were punctuated by many violations.
The battles have so far killed at least 512 people and wounded thousands, according to a statement by the Sudanese Ministry of Health, but the number of victims may be much more than that as a result of the ongoing fighting.
