“Sudan Conflict: Rival Generals Agree to Three-Day Ceasefire, US Calls for Permanent Cessation of Hostilities”

US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken announced on Monday that rival generals in the conflict in Sudan had agreed to a three-day nationwide ceasefire in an attempt to end the violence.

“After intense negotiations over the past 48 hours, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed to implement a nationwide ceasefire beginning at midnight on April 24, to last 72 hours,” Antony Blinken said in a statement. “During this period, the United States expects the army and the RSF to fully and immediately respect this ceasefire,” he added.

The objective of setting up negotiations

The American Secretary of State further indicates that the United States is working with its allies and partners with a view to setting up a “commission” which would be responsible for negotiating a permanent cessation of hostilities in Sudan.

Antony Blinken had spoken earlier on Monday with his Kenyan counterpart about the conflict in Sudan and has recently increased exchanges with rival generals, as well as with countries in the region and the African Union. Many countries are carrying out repatriation operations for their nationals or their diplomatic personnel from Sudan, where the war between the army and the paramilitaries has been raging since April 15.
