The agreement between the countries came about after American mediation. US President Donald Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and top Sudanese officials on Friday.
Journalists were allowed to enter Trump’s Oval Office during that phone call. The president can use the new diplomatic success well. He hopes to be re-elected in a week and a half, but is behind in the polls.
Sneer Biden
The president was referring to his political rival Joe Biden in the phone call. “Do you think Sleepy Joe could have made this deal?” He asked Netanyahu. Trump also directly answered his own question: “I don’t think so.”
Representatives from Israel and Sudan are likely to sign the deal in the White House within weeks. Delegations from the countries will also discuss their future trade relationship.
Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates already preceded Sudan earlier this year. Trump said that at least five other countries also want to make such agreements. He only mentioned the great Saudi Arabia by name.
Terrorland
Trump now wants to remove Sudan from the list of countries that support terrorism. He has also informed parliament about this. If Sudan goes off that black list, it is expected that more companies will dare to do business there.
Sudan was ruled by autocrat Omar al-Bashir for decades, but his regime was toppled last year after massive protests. The new Sudanese government is also making $ 335 million available to compensate victims of the Al-Qaeda terror group or their families.
Six Day War
The Arab country declared war on Israel in the last century. After the Six Day War in 1967, delegations from the Arab countries gathered in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum. There they came with their ‘three no’s’: no peace, no recognition, and no negotiations with Israel.
The Palestinian rulers condemn the historic steps towards peace and normalization. “This is another stab in the back of the Palestinian people and betrayal of the Palestinian cause,” concluded a senior Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official. Hamas spoke of a “step in the wrong direction.”
