Sudan accuses Ethiopia of executing seven Sudanese soldiers and a civilian held captive. The Sudanese army says in a statement published by state news agency NAMEthat the action will get an “appropriate response”.
Ethiopia is also said to have publicly displayed the bodies after the executions. According to Sudan, this concerns behavior “that is contrary to all laws, customs of war and international humanitarian law”.
Reuters news agency did not immediately receive a response from Ethiopia to the allegations.
Rising tensions
Tensions between African neighbors have recently been rising due to, among other things, the conflict in Ethiopian Tigray; the region on the western side borders Sudan. Tens of thousands of refugees moved to Sudan because of the conflict.
Furthermore, Ethiopia against the will of Sudan and also Egypt built a dam in the Blue Nile, which rises in Ethiopia. Earlier this year, Ethiopia commissioned the dam. Filling the reservoir is at the expense of the amount of river water that flows further to Sudan and Egypt.
Those countries depend on the water from the Nile and see the dam as a threat, because Ethiopia has a significant influence on the water level in the Nile through the dam.
