Although the newly announced spinoff episode of the Borderlands series, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, will not be released until 2022, the IGN Expo also revealed a lot of exciting details about the game.
IGN has asked the game’s creative director, Matt Cox, himself to reveal to us the secrets of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands first trailer so we have some idea of what game and solutions we can expect.
What is it about and where does the game take place?
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands picks up the yarn shortly after the events of Borderlands 2’s DLC for Assault on Dragon Keep, and in fact, this add-on also inspired the creation of the spinoff. Cox, however, added that it is not necessary to know the story of Assault on Dragon Keep’s DLC in order to enjoy Wonderlands, as it is a whole new adventure in a whole new world.
Wonderlands takes place in an unpredictable fantasy world that is constantly evolving depending on how the game in play, Bunkers & Badasses (the Dungeons & Dragons-like tap of the Borderlands universe), is shaped by Tiny Tina. Cox says Wonderlands isn’t a game that once you get to the end, there’s nothing left to do with it, as there will be plenty of collectible loots in it, and endgame content can be played through multiple times.
The main characters
Unlike the mainstream Borderlands games, in Wonderlands we can create our own hero who can pick up multiple castes. It has not yet been revealed that we will control a silent character or that our figure will sometimes sound, which would not be bad just because in the Wonderlands, talent actors such as Ashly Burch (Tiny Tina), Andy Samberg (Captain) Valentine), or Will Arnett, who played the main evil, Dragon Lord, and Wanda Sykes, who appears as the rule-following robot, Fret.
Weapons, loot, magic
As expected, Wonderlands doesn’t skimp on guns and lots. According to Cox, unfortunately, the mordants cannot be modified, but in return we find plenty all over the world. But not only firearms, but melee equipment and even spells. We can also deploy armor and amulets (the latter certainly provide skills or tune statistics), but we won’t find one thing in the prestigious arsenal: grenades. These seem to be replaced by magic in the Wonderlands.
Our hero will otherwise have certain abilities by default depending on the caste of his choice, but we can endow him with many other abilities by spells. “We think of spells as miniskills because of their power and variety,” Cox explained.
The opponents
In addition to the Dragon Lord formed by Will Arnett, we have a couple more opponents in the Wonderlands, mostly typical fantasy monsters that the developers say fit better with Tiny Tina. In the trailer, we can see, for example, a dragon or a skeleton protruding from under the ground, but there will also be specialties such as kneaded sharks walking on their feet.
In addition to tonight’s IGN Expo, we’re also making a lot of other exciting announcements, follow me on our site for IGN’s all-month event, Summer of Gaming, and of course the upcoming E3!
