Miersch has been a member of the Bundestag since 2005 and is currently part of the leadership of the Parliamentary Left in the SPD. The lawyer has been deputy parliamentary group leader since 2017. In this role, Miersch is responsible for the environment, climate protection, energy, agriculture and consumer protection. These issues are considered important areas of political debate in the election campaign.

Miersch’s topics: environment, climate protection, energy, agriculture and consumer protection

Miersch is considered an advocate of the energy transition, i.e. the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels. In parliamentary work, the lawyer is considered well-versed and experienced. For example, in the debate about the controversial heating law, he was instrumental in pushing through changes to the government draft. Miersch is a supporter of reforming the debt brake to enable more investment in infrastructure, for example.

He is considered to be very well connected within the party and has a lot of organizational experience. In the past he was also considered a possible successor to parliamentary group leader Mützenich. He recently declared that he wanted to run for the Bundestag again. The party leaders Klingbeil and Esken now proposed Miersch as a provisional successor to the resigned General Secretary Kühnert, as several media outlets unanimously reported. An SPD party conference then officially has to vote on the personnel.
