The latest episode of Succession, “Kill List,” opens with Kendall Roy’s first official day as co-CEO of Waystar. He’s confident and blasting Jay-Z’s “Takeover” as he walks through the office. Despite technically sharing the position with his brother Roman, it’s clear Kendall views himself as the true leader. The majority of the episode takes place at a GoJo corporate retreat in Norway where Waystar’s top executives have gathered to close the deal for GoJo’s acquisition of the company. The tension is palpable as everyone tries to secure their own interests, from Shiv, who sees through Kendall’s lies, to Gerri, Frank, and Karl, who want to ensure their golden parachutes. The brothers’ plan to tank the deal ultimately fails as they are outsmarted by Lukas, who substantially increases his offer. Ironically, Kendall’s attempt to leave himself in charge ends up increasing the sale price and perhaps proves he’s not such a schmuck after all.
