Successful Xenotransplantation: Second Attempt at Pig Heart Transplantation Shows Promise

On September 20, a new stage was recorded in the history of xenotransplantation (when an animal organ is transplanted into the human body). With his consent, a 58-year-old man suffering from end-stage cardiovascular disease received a heart taken from a genetically modified pig by surgeons in the United States. This patient is the second in whom this type of intervention has been attempted, after a first historic trial in January 2022 in a 57-year-old man, David Bennett, carried out by the same scientific and medical team. The latter died two months after the porcine heart transplant.
