Doctors remove bezoar from gum in boy’s stomach in several passes – through the mouth, multiple passes of the esophagoscope.
“It was considered a safe option,” the doctors concluded. “It would be impossible to dissolve a mass of chewing gum in the stomach. The bezoar did not pose a risk to neighboring organs, so it was decided to refuse surgical intervention. If endoscopic treatment had not helped, they would have performed laparoscopy – an operation through small openings.
Luckily, the doctors were able to remove all of the swallowed gum from the baby’s stomach. The only side effect was that after manipulations by endoscopists the boy complained of a sore throat: he was injured by multiple passages of the esophagoscope. But in the end, the young gum lover was discharged from the hospital with no long-term health effects.
