The Saxenburgh Medical Center is connected to the old hospital by a corridor, so the patients do not have to go outside. Nevertheless, you should not underestimate the move, says Van der Kam: “We are dealing with very vulnerable patients, often with drip or other equipment. They have to get in and out of old elevators and go through hundreds of meters of corridors. We don’t take any risks with that.” .
On schedule
According to a strict script, the patients are taken one by one from their old room with bed and all to the new hospital, accompanied by a team of doctors and nurses. A new patient arrives at the hospital every three minutes.
The preparations for this have taken months. As a result, there is now no stress, says Van der Kam: “It is important that this takes place in an orderly manner, with military precision. And that is how it is done now. Everyone knows exactly what is expected and we are well on schedule”.
Final check
Gerrit Geertman has had surgery on his heart and has been in hospital for a while: “I have been waiting so long that I can still experience this day”, he laughs. It is his turn at 10.16. Fifteen minutes in advance, a doctor does the final check before a patient is allowed to leave, and for good reason: Gerrit’s heartbeat shoots up and down dangerously.
The cardiologist is quickly called in and a heart movie is made. With some extra cables and plugs to keep a close eye on his heart on the way, he can still leave. At exactly 16 minutes past ten, nurses drive him through the old corridors to the new building for the last time.

Three minutes later, Gerrit is already sitting in his bright new room with a cup of tea. He recorded the move from the bed with his camera: “I like this to experience, so I make a booklet of it, also for the department. This is unique, you only experience something like this once”.

The move went well and everything is perfect for each other in the hospital.
