Successful fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier has died

Demarchelier’s most famous photographs were those of Princess Diana, first photographed in 1989. He was the first non-British photographer to be asked to capture the royal family.

He also helped define the appearance of Harper’s Bazaar in the 1990s under the baton of legendary editor Liz Tilberis.

His photograph of the supermodel Linda Evangelista, which appeared on the front page in September 1992 under the title “Enter the Era of Elegance”, remains one of the most remarkable and memorable covers in the history of magazines.

His black-and-white portraits of dozens of celebrities from Kate Moss to Leonardo DiCaprio, RuPaul to Phoebe Philo remain heavily mentioned decades after some were taken.

Demarchelier was born in 1943 near Paris and grew up in Le Havre, Normandy. He started taking pictures as a teenager. In 1975, when he was just over 30, he moved to New York and quickly became familiar with the industry.

He started photographing magazine covers and filming advertising campaigns for companies such as Gap and Chanel. Although he was French, Demarchelier worked mainly in America and for American versions of magazines.

“Patrick takes perfect photos of simple photos, which is of course extremely difficult. She works without fancy scenery, often in black and white, makes attractive women look beautiful and beautiful women look real, ”said longtime colleague Anna Wintour, Condé Nast’s global content director and Vogue editor-in-chief, in an article for Christie’s in September 2015.

Over the years, Demarchelier has become one of the most visible representatives of the fashion industry, appearing in the film Sex and the City in 2008 and also featured in The Devil Wears the Prada.

The report of his death was posted on his social networks.
