Raj Kumar, 45, suffered an accident in 2020 when a train hit him, losing control of his bicycle.
The man received prosthetics to continue his work, but they did not work, preventing him from continuing with his tasks and vocation.
However, his fortune changed when he was informed that he would receive the hands of Meena Mehta, former administrative director of a school in the south of the city.
According to international media, the man underwent a bilateral hand transplant directed by Dr. Mahesh Mangal’s team, at the Hospital Sir Ganga Ram.
Following established protocols for transplants, after a thorough examination and necessary investigations, a team of 11 doctors carried out the 12-hour procedure. During this time, they carefully reconnected various components, including bones, arteries, veins, tendons, muscles, nerves and skin.
According to SS Gambhir, an experienced plastic surgeon who was involved in the man’s hand transplant operation, this was the first time this type of procedure was performed in the Indian capital. The surgery took place in January of this year.
“The deceased donor had promised that her organs would be donated after her death. Her family was also aware of her desire, so with her consent, we immediately used the donated limbs.
The recipient was prepared for surgery, and the blood group compatibility analyzes were favorable, which led to proceeding with the transplant.said the plastic surgeon.
Furthermore, Lalita Grover, sister of the donor, highlighted the importance of organ donation, citing the wish previously expressed by Meena Mehta:
“She inspired us about the importance of donating organs. She informed us that she is willing to donate her organs if she dies. So we remembered her wish and gave our consent for the transplant,” she expressed.
