Successful debut at the 15th Sparkasse State Youth Games. It’s 10 a.m.: The fencing participants are preparing their equipment, while in the hall the boxers are putting on their gloves or the volleyball nets are being tightened next door. But outside on the sports field it’s already time for the kickoff and for the children’s and youth teams of the “American Football Association Saxony eV (AFVS)”.
It is the 15th Sparkasse State Youth Games 2023 that will take place in and around Dresden. Under the motto “Show your sporting talent”, the largest young sports event in Saxony attracts young athletes from all over the Free State to the state capital. Around 5,000 of them compete against each other in more than 50 sports for three days.
The sport “Flag Football” is represented for the first time this year at the Sparkasse State Youth Games and it is also the first participation in this event for the children and youth teams of the American Football Association Saxony eV. Flag football is a variant of American football, which does not require physical contact. The moves are stopped by tearing off flags attached to the belt instead of a tackle. Contactless sport is therefore particularly suitable for children and young people.
Melik Seelig, head of the youth flag league in Saxony from the American Football Association of Saxony, knows how great the interest of young athletes in flag football is: “Our first participation was a complete success and we were able to experience an exciting tournament. Flag football was one of the sports represented by the largest number of athletes in Ostra Sports Park. We left a very good impression and were very happy to present our sport to a wide audience.”
For more than four hours, many yards were gained on the green, balls were thrown and caught and points were collected. With the best weather, the AFVS teams and their guests experienced a great and exciting tournament. A total of nine teams from Leipzig, Chemnitz, Annaberg-Buchholz, Radebeul and Dresden competed against each other in two age groups on two sports fields.
In the two age groups of Juniors and Bambinis, the Dresden Monarchs were able to assert themselves as local heroes. But the Sparkasse State Youth Games want to achieve more than just choosing winners. Sport and athletes get a platform to present themselves, of course to compete with each other, but in the end also to exchange ideas and network. The biggest winners were the sport itself, which was able to present itself in an eventful way, as well as the children’s and youth teams of the AFVS, who will remember an exciting and successful tournament for a long time to come.
