Successful coach Otto Rehhagel, who celebrates his 85th birthday on Wednesday, had many great players under his wing. So he finds it difficult to name the best kicker he has coached.
However, the New Zealand striker Wynton Rufer (60) was knighted by “King Otto”. “I was very fortunate to be able to work with many exceptional footballers,” said Rehhagel in the SID interview: “I have special memories of Wynton Rufer, for example, who could do everything. Header, shooting left and right, a clever dog, super smart and incredibly fast.”
The Greek European champion coach would have believed himself capable of successfully accompanying Cristiano Ronaldo as a coach on the home stretch of his career. “You have to know that he doesn’t run after him. He doesn’t need to,” explained Rehhagel.
Dealing with people is crucial. Rehhagel: “When you have a player like Ronaldo, who has a charisma for spectators and journalists, then you have to see that you get along with him as a coach. That was always my strength.”
