Götz Alsmann is not only one of the most famous faces of the city of Münster, but also a passionate supporter of the traditional club SC Preußen Münster from the Regionalliga West. The 63-year-old musician and entertainer, who is primarily a presenter of the WDR-Show “Rooms Available!” Nationwide fame, is a regular guest in the Preußenstadion – if his time and the Corona rules allow.
In the past, Alsmann also composed an anthem for the founding member of the Bundesliga, which was relegated from the 3rd division in 2020 after nine years and currently ranks fourth in the Regionalliga West. His connection to the club is so great that the current Prussian jersey even features an original caricature of Alsmann on the back of the collar.
Alsmann’s commitment to SC Preußen goes beyond fan love and musical support: he was also involved in the current project “Münster runs around the world”. The all-rounder, famous for his quiff, acted as a fairy at the end of the campaign, which advocates more movement in lockdown. The “Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2000” raffled numerous surprise prizes from the participating clubs and partners among all participants.

Three clubs, one goal: The “circumnavigation of the world”
What began as an apparently small idea in the “Münster goes around the world” campaign, literally developed into a global success within a very short time. The three sports clubs USC Münster (volleyball), WWU Baskets (basketball) and SC Preußen joined forces to ensure more movement in lockdown.

The aim was to encourage all people from Münster to run in order to “go around the world once” – that is, to unwind 40,075 kilometers. There was also active support from Münster’s mayor Markus Lewe, who accepted the personal challenge from Prussian sports director Peter Niemeyer and contributed 17.37 kilometers. The support from Münster’s schools was also great. For example, the secondary school in the Kreuzviertel linked its digital sports lessons with the campaign and immediately deposited 1,504.1 kilometers into the campaign account.
Anyone could take part, regardless of whether they were (ex) players, coaches, supervisors, fans or sponsors. So that the kilometers could also be added up, the image or screenshot of the respective running app had to have the hashtag #MuensterumdieWelt on Instagram and Facebook linked or sent by email. Those who wanted to support the project and motivate the runners could donate to the Children’s Cancer Aid in Münster per kilometer or part.
More than 40,000 kilometers in 24 days
On January 26th – just 24 days after the start of the campaign – the 40,075 kilometers had been covered. The dynamism and speed with which the ambitious goal of circumnavigating the world was achieved surprised even those responsible a little. “The basic idea was that the three clubs want to move closer together and cooperate more,” says Ole Kittner, former Prussian professional and co-initiator of the campaign. “The original idea of only allowing your own youth teams to compete against each other was taken further and further – with the aim of including as many Münster residents as possible.”
That this campaign was so successful, Kittner, who now works as a sports psychologist, also has an explanation: “The initiative has succeeded in creating a sense of togetherness that has not recently existed because sports clubs are closed, the togetherness in the dressing room or in the team circle. But I wouldn’t have expected the social media dynamic that the whole thing then achieved. ”
The raffle for the surprise prizes by the ardent Prussian fan Götz Alsmann was the perfect end to a successful campaign that did good for several reasons: “Münster goes around the world” not only ensured more movement and variety in a special time , but also for important donations for the city’s children’s cancer aid. That too was entirely to the liking of Götz Alsmann, who agreed to support and can hardly wait to be able to keep his fingers crossed for “his” SC Preußen again in the stadium on Hammer Strasse.
