As part of the commemoration of the 12e anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the Haitian capital on January 12, 2010, Konbit San Pou San (KSPS), in partnership with the Marriott Hotel, the Gwoup Konbit and the Arise organization, has organized a campaign to collect blood in memory of the victims.
More than a hundred people made the trip, but only a few dozen of them were authorized to donate blood, due in particular to the seasonal flu epidemic that is sweeping the country.
This activity is of great importance, taking into account the number of people who succumbed to their injuries in 2010 for lack of a bag of blood, recalls Clara Guillaume, one of the initiators of the campaign.
“It’s unfair that a person died because of a blood problem, when we have it,” she said, while raising awareness about becoming regular donors. This will make it possible, she underlines, to have blood available for the injured in the event of a natural disaster, an accident, not to mention childbirth situations.
“And it’s shocking when a member of a family loses his life in such a circumstance,” she continues, pointing out that by adopting the culture of blood donation, members of the population can participate in reducing the number deaths in the country.
For people who have concerns about the impact of this gesture on their health, Clara Guillaume says that volunteers are supported throughout the process.
“Women can donate blood every four months and men, every three months,” says the nurse.
In addition, Guillaume says he has noticed that there are more and more people who understand the need to donate and who are preparing to become regular donors in the country.
