John Paul DeJoria was raised by a single mother in Los Angeles before finally being put into foster care because he was no longer able to provide a living. When he was over the age limit, DeJoria became homeless because he had no place to live.

Nevertheless, DeJoria sees his economic downturn as an opportunity to work hard. When he has no money to eat, he sells Christmas cards. When he couldn’t go to college because he couldn’t pay, he sold encyclopedias. He never depended on others.

“If you’re expecting a free lunch to come, you won’t go far and you’ll be very bored. Go and do something,” he said, quoted by NBC News, Sunday (8/8/2021).

As someone who has personally struggled through his 20s, he learned a lot before starting his first profitable venture, John Paul Mitchell Systems. DeJoria initially studied the hair care business while working for Redken and Fermodyl Hair Care. But he was eventually fired from both companies.

The success of John Paul Mitchell Systems was ultimately the result of word of mouth selling and gaining the attention of its first distributor, who settled their first bill.

From there, her hair care products were sold in a number of salons and turned into a multimillion-dollar company in just two years.
