Success in the Olympics – but Angeldahl takes nothing for granted in the World Cup qualifiers

It was one of the few places in the starting eleven that was not booked.

Who would play next to Caroline Seger in midfield at the Olympics?

The answer: 24-year-old Filippa Angeldahl – and as she did.

The championship debutant who before this summer’s Olympic football in Japan only started in a single international competition, already impressed in the premiere victory against the USA, and then was left alone to start in all matches in the silver tournament.

Of course, it was heavy that there was no gold in the final drama against Canada, Angeldahl says before Friday’s World Cup qualifier away against Slovakia.

– But at the same time you have been able to digest it and see a pride in the achievement we did. And I had a good Olympics, so it is clear that you try to look back on the moments that were good.

What is the explanation for you being able to take this step?

– It’s a lot about trust. I got trust from Peter (national team captain Gerhardsson) and it meant that you are seen in a different way and can really show who you are as a football player.

As late as this week she still belonged to Häcken, and gave the Gothenburg team a push into the group game in the Champions League with two goals in the first the playoff meeting with Norwegian Vålerengen. But when the Swedish champions reached the European dream the following week, Angeldahl was suddenly a Manchester City player.

There will be no Champions League game after the playoffs against Real Madrid.

– But that was not what was decisive when I signed for City. But it was to come to a new environment where I get to develop every day.

– I felt towards the end that I had played in the Allsvenskan for many years and that I have met all the teams several times, I needed a new challenge.

Debut in the English league came this Saturday. But next is the national team that counts.

In fact, it was precisely against the 45th-ranked Slovakia that Filippa Angeldahl made her debut from the start in a competitive match for Blågult, when the European Championship qualifiers had already been decided last autumn. Now she meets the same team in a new seat.

Still, she does not dare to fully count on games.

– I think, as I always do, that I have to deliver here for training. What happened at the Olympics happened then. You can not live on old merits.
