Success for NASA: the space probe crashed into an asteroid

If films like “Deep Impact to Armageddon” and “Dont Look Up” are to be believed, annihilation is the best way to deal with an asteroid should it threaten Earth.

Researchers at John Hopkins University, on the other hand, believe that this is exactly who we are Not should do.

Instead, they want in order to change the trajectory of the asteroid.

NASA has caught up with us. A space probe has now crashed into an asteroid in space. The collision occurred at 01:14 on Tuesday night, Norwegian time.

NASA calls it its first attempt at planetary defense. This asteroid was certainly not on a collision course with Earth.

Defend the planet

– It’s new research and a new understanding of nature, Andy Rivkin said before the experiment.

Rivkin is the leader of the team working on the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) experiment.

NASA believes this could make us better prepared to defend our planet if a celestial body ever becomes a threat.

– A new era

– We have embarked on a new era of humanity, an era in which we potentially have the opportunity to protect ourselves from an asteroid collision, says Planetary Science Director Lori Glaze minutes after the collision.

Images from the office show a relieved and elated team when they saw the spacecraft finally hit the asteroid on Tuesday night.

Careful preparations

It took 10 months for the spacecraft to reach the asteroid.

The asteroid selected for the experiment, Dimorphos, is the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza, according to the Norwegian Space Center.

The price of the ship is a whopping $ 330 million, which is about NOK 3.5 billion, according to The Guardian.

The spacecraft crashed into the asteroid 11 million kilometers from Earth.
