Success and Economic Impact of the 2023 Mandalika MotoGP in Jakarta: Ticket Sales and Turnover Exceed Expectations

Jakarta

The 2023 Mandalika MotoGP ended and was said to be a success in the creative economy sector. The turnover in the event reached hundreds of billions of rupiah.

Deputy for Strategic Policy at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) Dessy Ruhati outlined a temporary estimate of the circulation of money at the Mandalika MotoGP event. He said the current estimate reached IDR 914 billion.

“Estimated cash turnover, ticket sales MotoGP 2023 and spending “from spectators or tourists who attended it was 914 billion rupiah, which is a temporary result because the calculation process is still ongoing until now,” said Dessy in a press conference at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy office, Jakarta, Monday (16/10/2023).

The amount of turnover from ticket sales was IDR 73 billion, while tourist expenditure during the event was estimated at IDR 841 billion.

Dessy said that this figure was not yet the result of real calculations, because the data collection process was still ongoing until October 21 2023. He would announce the final data on economic movements at the Mandalika MotoGP in early November 2023.

The 2023 Mandalika MotoGP event was visited by 102,929 people. Of this amount, he explained that visitors spend around IDR 5 – 10 million per day.

Money turnover figures can also be seen from the accommodation side. Dessy explained that room occupancy in zones 1 to 3 reached 100 percent, and there was an increase in prices during the event.

“Then what you also need to pay attention to in this case is that when you are there, be grateful that room occupancy, especially in accommodation zones 1 to 3, namely in Mandalika, Praya and Mataram City, reaches 100 percent with price increases reaching 2 to 3 times,” said he.

“Then, the place to stay chosen is of course still mostly hotels, 40 percent and homestays, 20 percent, and some are at relatives’ homes and also resorts,” he said.

He also claimed that survey results showed that 90 percent of visitors would return to Mandalika, not just for Moto GP.

“90 percent of visitors will visit again not only because of MotoGP but because the facilities at Mandalika have provided satisfaction,” he said.

Apart from that, income for business actors is also said to have increased by 36.54 percent. And he is said to have agreed to take part in enlivening the MotoGP event the following year.

On the other hand, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf) Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said that although this money circulation was not final, it had exceeded the target.

“The Mandalika MotoGP has reaped good results, and we have superior initial data. But what I can convey is that the estimated turnover and ticket sales are very high and have exceeded our target, and the involvement of Pentahelix,” said Sandiaga.

He even revealed that there are parties who want this first-class motorbike event to be held in other areas.

“And they want this to also be held in several other leading tourist destinations and several other records,” he said.
