After an unknown gunman opened fire on passengers on a New York subway on Tuesday, the police are now looking for the renter of a van and are stepping up protection for the mayor.
After a gun attack on the New York City subway, investigations focus on a van renter who may be involved in the crime. Chief investigator James Essig said it was still unclear whether the 62-year-old was linked to the attack. Police tried to locate the man after the car was found.
Among other things, the investigators looked at the man’s posts on social networks. Some of these prompted authorities to tighten security measures for New York Mayor Eric Adams. New YorkPolice Commissioner Keechant Sewell called the posts “concerning”.
In the attack, at least ten people were shot in the morning rush hour traffic in Brooklyn, who were injured. At least 33 bullets were fired. A subway car filled with smoke generated by the perpetrator. Screaming commuters ran through the subway station, bloodied people lay on the platform while others tended to them. Investigators assumed the gunman’s gun jammed, preventing him from continuing to fire.
Five of the victims were in critical condition. However, they were expected to survive. At least a dozen people who sustained no gunshot wounds were treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries. Sewell said the attack was not being investigated as a terrorism case, but she didn’t rule out anything either. The shooter’s motive was unknown.
The shooter had been sitting in the back of the second subway car, throwing smoke grenades on the ground, pulling out a handgun and opening fire, Essig said. Police found the weapon along with magazines, a hatchet, detonated and undetonated smoke grenades, a black garbage can, a wheelbarrow, petrol and the key to a rental van.
The rental car was later found near another subway station where investigators believe the perpetrator got on.
