Subvariant of omicron could predominate over Latin

Cases in Central America have been increasing (+54.9 percent), while in South America they increased by two percent, and in North America by 4.5 percent.

However, an increasing proportion of cases are being caused by the BA.4 and BA.5 omicron sublineages and this is causing new infections across the continent.

The BA.5 subvariant was detected in at least 22 countries and there is a high probability that it will become predominant throughout all subregions in the coming weeks, according to PAHO estimates.

This virus knows no borders, especially now that international travel is back on track, while vaccines continue to be highly effective against any of the subvariants in preventing serious illness or even death.

The United Kingdom has already exceeded 200,000 deaths from Covid-19. Meanwhile, UK authorities reported the death toll from the virus in question. The British Office for National Statistics (ONS) stated that a total of 200,247 people died from coronavirus, although the number of daily deaths is much lower than during the first waves of infections.

Meanwhile, the Government pointed out as a striking factor the presence of a new subvariant of the omicron, which would be responsible for an upturn in cases. Since the end of June, the authorities estimate that some 200,000 deaths had been registered, but only now have they been officially confirmed.

At the moment the weekly death toll from Covid-19 remains stable below a thousand, data that reached approximately 10,000 during the peak of infections in January last year.

In Spain, the autonomous communities reported 59,226 new cases of Covid-19 to the Ministry of Health, compared to 71,818 on the same day last week, of which 34,236 adults over 60 years of age were affected.

The total number of infections in Spain has risen above 13,032,841 since the pandemic began, according to official statistics. The incidence in people over 60 years of age is concentrated in 1,255.51 in the last 14 days per 100,000, compared to 1,225.28 on Friday. In recent weeks, a total of 154,654 positives have been registered in this age group, figures that denote a certain degree of concern.
