Subvariant BA.2 represents a third of infections in NYC

COVID cases are down in the city but there is a highly transmissible subvariant that now accounts for almost a third of infections.

However, city health officials say this is not a cause for alarm, explaining that the BA.2 sub-variant does not appear to cause more severe illness than other omicron strains.

In his first formal briefing on COVID, the city’s new health commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan emphasized that New York is currently in a good place in its fight against the virus.

Vasan reported that there is currently no evidence that the BA.2 variant increases the risks of hospitalization or that our current vaccines offer less protection.

Dr. Vasan also discussed the need for New Yorkers to catch up with their primary care physicians and to consider the impact of the pandemic on their mental health.
