A dramatic high-speed chase through several western Chicago suburbs on Feb. 21 resulted in the arrest of a Chicago man on serious drug charges. Kentrell Hayes, 25, was apprehended after a pursuit involving multiple police departments and reaching speeds of at least 95 mph.
The incident began in Westmont when Westmont police attempted to stop a gray Toyota, allegedly driven by Hayes, for speeding eastbound on 63rd Street.Authorities say that when the officer approached the vehicle, Hayes made a U-turn and fled westbound. Westmont police ended their pursuit, but Hinsdale police quickly took over as Hayes continued his flight northbound on Route 83.
The chase escalated around 1:40 a.m. when Oak Brook police deployed stop sticks on northbound Route 83 near 31st Street. Despite hitting the stop sticks and losing three tires, Hayes continued his reckless flight, exiting onto I-88. An Oak Brook officer pursued Hayes, who maintained high speeds onto I-290, where he lost control of his vehicle and struck a concrete barrier. Even with the hood of his car flipped onto the windshield, Hayes continued driving until Forest Park police successfully blocked him in and arrested him at 1:55 a.m.
A search of Hayes and his vehicle revealed a notable amount of narcotics. Authorities reported finding 108 bags of heroin/fentanyl and four bags of cocaine, along with over $1,600 in cash.
“It is alleged that Mr. Hayes was in possession of more than one hundred grams of fentanyl/heroin mixture that was capable of killing tens of thousands of people,”DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said.
Berlin praised the collaborative efforts of the various police departments involved, citing the arrest as a prime example of successful inter-agency cooperation in combating the opioid crisis. He specifically commended the oak Brook Police Department for its role in the apprehension.
“This arrest is an excellent example of some of the underlying reasons offenders are fleeing from the police,”Oak Brook Chief of Police Brian Strockis said.“I’m quite sure this offender has fled from the police in other jurisdictions numerous times and got away with it. His luck ran out this time and the Oak Brook Police Department continues to send a strong message that we will not tolerate reckless criminal behaviour.”
Hayes appeared in court on Friday facing serious charges, including two counts of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance (Class Super X felony), one count of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance – cocaine (Class 1 felony), and one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony). His next court appearance is scheduled for March 17.
