Submarine Wreckage from 100 Years Ago Discovered in Long Island Sound

It took a group of enthusiasts years to search for the more than 100-year-old vessel, now they want to photograph and document the submarine, he wrote server stanice CBS News.

The discovery was made in the strait off the island of Long Island near the town of Old Saybrook, about 150 kilometers from New York. “She was literally hiding in plain sight. It can even be seen on maps. That place in the strait was known about, but no one had any idea what was lying at the bottom,” said the head of the team of commercial divers, Richard Simon.

The wreck is a reminder of the earliest history of submarines, long before the era of submarine warfare. The vessel was built by millionaire and inventor Lake in order to apply for a contract with the US Navy with the prototype. But he never got it.

Lake constructed the first submarine in 1897 and named it Argonaut. In the designs, he was inspired by Jules Verne’s description of the fictional submarine Nautilus, and also in the case of another vessel, the Defender, which had wheels designed to move on the seabed and a door through which divers could exit below the surface. Lake never went into mass production and was unable to sell the 28-meter-long submarine. Finally, after the end of its useful life, it was sunk by the US Navy in 1946, the exact location was never disclosed.
