An alleged civilian employee of the NYPD is charged with impersonating a police officer to hijack an MTA bus after stealing a bottle of wine on Thanksgiving.
The MTA bus was heading to Manhattan, but the defendant, identified as Joseph McGreevy, 61, forced the driver to take him to Brooklyn.
According to the police report, McGreevy stole a bottle of wine from a hotel in Lower Manhattan where he was staying before boarding an X28 express bus on Canal St. and Sixth Ave. in Tribeca around 1 p.m. Thursday.
McGreevy was wearing a NYPD uniform when he threatened the driver. The NYPD said there were no passengers on the bus at the time.
The bus driver drove to Brooklyn, but stopped a police officer en route, who immediately determined that McGreevy was not an officer and pulled him over.
McGreevy is charged with spoofing, obstruction of government administration and petty theft, police said. He is awaiting charges in Manhattan Criminal Court.
McGreevy worked as an administrative assistant for the New York Police Department at the 1st Barracks, in Tribeca, although the uniformed officer did not reveal if he is still an employee of the department, as last month he also posed as an officer showing a false badge to a group of mounted police officers in Midtown. The subject fled when officers asked for a photo ID.
He was arrested on October 30 and charged with impersonation and reckless conduct, among other charges. McGreevy is due to appear in court on January 20 for that case, according to court records.
