Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD: The Secret to Its Popularity and Performance

Jakarta

Since the introduction of the Subaru Leone 4WD Estate Van in September 1972, Subaru has produced more than 21 million AWD drive cars worldwide to date. This number is equivalent to 98 percent of the total Subaru cars produced. So why is this all-wheel drive variant so popular with the market?

The all-wheel drive system in Subaru cars is called Symmetrical AWD. The drivetrain in this drive system is arranged symmetrically paired with a horizontally configured Boxer pacemaker.

The combination of the naturally low center of gravity of the Boxer engine and the superior weight balance of the symmetrical drivetrain is said to maximize stability and traction at all wheel rims, offering outstanding driving performance in a variety of weather and road conditions.

“I think Subaru is the only automotive (brand) in the world that has consistently developed AWD for 50 years. Subaru applies AWD to its entire product line up. So that’s what makes Subaru special, apart from the boxer engine,” said Chief Executive Officer of Subaru Indonesia Arie Christopher in Jakarta , Wednesday (18/10/2023).

Arie added that the AWD drive system in Subaru has proven to be comfortable, both for off-road use and for daily activities. This is also supported by fuel consumption that is quite efficient for an all-wheel drive car.

“AWD traction is better and safer. AWD is not only for off road, but in all daily road conditions that we go through. For daily use, all road and weather conditions, it is safer. Likewise for fuel consumption, even for Crosstrek or “Forester fuel consumption can reach 1:14 to 1:15,” explained Arie.
