Subaru’s first electric car is here. Solterra is a disguised Toyota

The carmaker Subaru has only recently entered the field of hybrid cars with its e-boxer, which is on the border between a mild hybrid and a traditional full hybrid. He is now entering the waters of electric cars with a car called Solterra, in which existing customers should feel like in a real subaru.

But for some of them it can be difficult because the solter is disguised Toyota bZ4X, introduced recently. The differences are clearly visible from the outside – the solterra has a significantly different bow, including headlights, in which we can see a C-shaped light signature, on conventional models of the brand showing the movement of the pistons in a flat engine.

The hexagonal radiator grille also resembles the current subaru and has a solterra fog around the lower air intake. The taillights are also different, with the same light signature and no line across the entire width of the back. But that’s basically it – differently colored panels around the lights are the same, plasticizing around the wheels too.

In the cab, the proximity of the model from Toyota is even greater – everything comes from it except the logo on the steering wheel. “Toyoťácký” is also the font on the display and around the gear selector. On the one hand, this is not a bad thing, because the buttons of the Toyota and Lexus are great to use, on the other hand, the orthodox subarista does not avoid the impression that he is sitting in a Toyota.

What is not yet certain is whether the solterra will also receive an innovative wire control system and with it a steering wheel rather similar to an aircraft stick. Two published photos of the interior show “only” a normal steering wheel; in addition to the right, as all visual material relates to the Japanese version of the car.

The powertrain replicates this in the Toyota bZ4X, which means the basis in the form of a front wheel with one electric motor, which will give 204 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque, or an ATV with a second electric motor on the rear axle. Such a version will have 218 hp and 336 Nm and according to new information will mean two 109k electric motors, one on each axle.

Subaru promises precise cornering and variable power distribution between the front and rear axles. The car also gets X mode for off-road driving, which we know from other subaru, and a new Grip Control mode for faster driving on unpaved roads.

As with the Toyota, the battery should have a capacity of 71.4 kWh, a voltage of 355 V and will be enough for a range of 450 km. Charging will be possible up to 6.6kW AC and 150kW DC. Solterra sales will begin in the middle of next year.
