Atletico Madrid managed to solidify its position at the top of the standings LaLiga 2020/2021 after a 1-0 win over Alaves. Goals scored Luis Suarez placeholder image.
In the match that was held at the Wanda Metropolitano Estadion, Monday (22/3/2021) in the morning WIB, Atletico needed a victory after being eliminated by Chelsea in the last 16 of the Champions League yesterday.
LaLiga cannot be separated from Atletico because this competition is the last chance to win a trophy. Given Real Madrid and Barcelona lurking, Atletico never slipped again.
Lowering Luis Suarez and Angel Correa in the attack line, Atletico controlled the ball possession with eight attempts, four of which were on goal. However, Atletico had difficulty creating goals from the early minutes.
Alaves was able to endanger Jan Oblak’s goal in the 24th minute through Joselu who continued his partner’s attractive pass. However, his kicking ball still deviated from the target.
In the 30th minute, Stefan Savic tries to give a cross into the penalty box but the ball goes straight at the goal and forces Fernando Pacheco to brush it off.

After a goalless equalizer in the first half, Atletico broke the deadlock in the 54th minute. The attack from the right side was neatly built by Kieran Trippier who received feedback from Marcos Llorente.
Trippier sends the ball to the near post for Suarez to head into Pacheco’s net. This is Suarez’s 19th goal this season and only lost to Lionel Messi, who has scored 21 goals.
Alaves tried to level the score with several chances, but failed due to poor finishing. Even when the golden opportunity came in the 84th minute.
Alaves received a penalty after Savic was deemed to have elbowed Luis Rioja in the forbidden box through a VAR display. Unfortunately, Joselu’s penalty failed to become a goal after being pushed over by Oblak who moved to the left.
Until the Atletico vs Alaves match ended, the score 1-0 for the hosts’ victory lasted and solidified the position at the top of the LaLiga standings with 66 points from 28 matches. Atletico are six points ahead of Real Madrid in second place.
Meanwhile, Alaves remains in 19th position with 23 points.
